Making Softies

For room12 end of year craft we made softies. Softies are little toys that can be shaped as owls and other toys. In our case we made owls. First we had to organize blankets and curtain material,bean bag material and anything we could find to make softies. Then we could practice the running stitch which is a stitch that goes in and out of the fabric.  Also we learnt the whip stitch to sew up the bottom when we had finished stuffing our softies. After we finished our practice we planed our owls in our art books and choose the materiel or fabric that where needed.We gathered all the fabrics for the eyes, tails, feet. If we wanted to we could even make capes and hats. Once we finished putting our detail on we turned our fabric in so we could see the wrong side and started to do the running stitch all around the our owls. When we had finished we put in in the right way again, stuffed them and whip stitched them together. We had to make sure none of the stuffing came out. I only lightly stuffed my owl or else it would be a hard owl not a soft owl.

Swimsafe

Last week room12 went to swimsafe at waterworld. For most of the week my group were doing lengths but on the last day we went in the dive pool to practice survival skills.

High Jump

Last week in room12 we were practicing high jump for our school athletics. Our school energiser Dianne helped us get our jump right. We had to swing our arms up high so we were able to get over the bar without knocking it onto the mat. I thought I  was pretty good at it but there was still room for improvement to make my jump even better.

Juggling

In room 12 we are learning to juggle. We all have one ball each and then we pair up with a buddy. At first we had to make a figure "A" shape and not worry about catching them. Then we made our figure "A" shape again and try catch them without passing one ball over to the other hand. I found it hard at the start but when I got the hang of it I found it a lot easier to catch and throw.

My Spelling Wordle

In my spelling group, the blends, we were learning about the long a spelling pattern. Mrs Parkinson gave us a grid to write our words into the correct column. The patterns where magic "e", ai, ei, ea, ay, ey, eigh, aigh and an "a" all by its self. When I finished the grid I typed my words onto wordle and chose my layout, colour and font.

Paired Writing

In room 12 we have being doing a writing program called Paired writing for six weeks. Paired writing is when you are put  in buddys selected by your teacher. One buddy is a trained tutor and the other is a tutee. The tutee does all the writing and the tutor is there for support and any questions that your buddy has to ask. My buddy is Corrina. I am the tutor and Corrina is the tutee

Three things I have learnt or improved on is :

I have learnt to let others have a go instead of me doing it for them.

I have learnt to understand others and help them so they can understand there learning.

I have improved on proof reading because now I can pick up mistakes easily or quickly.

Two comments on my buddy :

I like seeing Corrina improve every time.
She always comes to paired writing organized and has lots of different story ideas.

One thing I found challenging :

Trying not to give to much information to my buddy. 

Blue Colour Poem

In room12 we made colour poems about colours that our teacher gave us.  A colour poem is a type of poem when you pick a metaphor to say your colour is something then describe the colour three times using similes.

Vardon School Production

 
On Wednesday the 12th and Thursday the 13th of September Vardon had their School Production. Our school production was about the environment and how it is so important to keep it clean. My class, room 12 did an act with room 6 and 11. Our act was about the air being so polluted we weren't able to breath. At the start of our act there were cars everywhere and there was even a smog machine to show how polluted it was! In the end we reduced the amount of pollution and we were able to breath again. Along with our act there were 4 other acts that different classrooms performed. There was a Sun act, Forest act, Garden act and an Ocean act.

Production

Three things I like the most about the production was:

 The stage experience.

 The face paint and costumes. 
Also I liked the silly string in the finale.

Two emotions I felt during the production were:
Nervous when I coming onto the stage because we couldn't see anyone but they could see us.
At the end I felt joyful because there was lots of singing and dancing and to our surprise there was silly string as well.

One thing I found challenging was:
Trying not to complain about the cold! It was freezing.

Cross Country

On the 25th of August the senoir syndicate went to Minoge Park for Cross Country. I had to run around the park twice and at the end I came out with 5th place and I felt proud. Even though I didn't make it to Interschool Cross Country I still have hope for next year.

Maori Language Week

In Maori language week I learnt lots of different phrases. Room 12 even learnt a song. It's called the body song. It starts like this :

Mahunga, Pakahiwi, Puku, Hope, wae wae.

In Maori language week I enjoyed using phrases in and out of school.

Term 3

This term I am looking forward to Wacky Olympics, the Production and Cross Country. I would like to improve in my math and spelling. One thing I would like to do do this term is to get our 20 marbles in the jar so we can get a reward.

Plurals

In room 12 we have been learning a lot about plurals. We have been taught to  put (es) on the end of words like church and if you put (es) on the end church becomes churches.You only put (s) on the end of words if there is a volwel plus a (y) on the end of a word.   
 The plurals that I find the easiest are putting (es) on the end of words. For an example match means just one but if I put (es) on the end the word will be changed to matches so now the words mean more than one.

My Speech

In term 2 the senior syndicate wrote and presented a speech to our classes. Our speeches had to be on a discovery or a discoverer. My speech was about Albert Einstein. I think I had good information and I used a bit of expression. I also used pictures. I could have made my speech a bit more humorous and I needed more information about what he did. I learnt that Albert Einstein was kicked out of two schools because of the practical jokes he played.

Remembrance Assembly

In week 6 room12 had a remembrance assembly. In the assembly there were two mad scientists who had built a time machine and four kids had volunteered  to go time travelling. The time travellers went through the war time. For the time travelers to go through time room 12 was split onto groups and acted out war plays.

My favourite part of our assembly was being a time traveller and travelling through time.

Remembrance

This term in room 12 our big idea is Remembrance and with our big idea we learnt about the ANZAC soldiers. When the soldiers went to war they were given ration packs. The ration packs contained Bully beef, rice, cocoa, jam, tea, bread and hard tack. The food they could eat was very limited because of the lack of refrigeration on the boat and at war.

Gym Sports

On Monday 2nd of April room 12 went to gym sports to learn some basics about gymnastics. In the gym session we did bunny hops, a mini vault, walking up the wall with our feet to handstand, scorpion kicks, candle stands, forward rolls and landing. What I found challenging was doing the bunny hops because I kept wanting to go to handstand. Some tips I could give to you are to keep tight and that will help you with all you moves. Also have fun!

Roman Numerals Poster

Dean and I have been working on a Roman Numerals poster. We have been learning about Roman Numerals and we thought we could put our learning together to make a poster. On our poster we had a chart to stick on our poster so people could get an idea of Roman Numerals. There where Roman Numerals from 1 to 100 in Roman with an English translation next to the number. We also put some facts about Roman Numerals and a Roman clock.

Swimming Sports

On Thursday the 8th of March the senior syndicate went to swimming sports. At school the seniors lined up to cram into the bus. When we had all boarded the bus we took off to the town pools. On our way to the pools the bus was really noisy. We had finally arrived at the town pool and we got off the bus and then we headed for the changing rooms to get in our togs. All the seniors are split into house groups. Our house groups are Batten, Hillary, Rutherford and my house group NGATA our colour is blue all the other houses have colours too. The events I took part in was backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. I also took part in the relay team! We swam against the other senior classes and came first so we got to verse the parents. When the day was over we went back to school on the bus and gathered all our belongings and went home. When I went home I flopped onto the couch and had a well deserved rest.
